Otology & Neurotology

Otology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diseases and disorders of the ear, including hearing and balance disorders and injuries or diseases of the skull base. Otology deals with the disease of the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear like Hearing loss (Deafness), Otitis (Ear infection), Cholesteatoma, Swimmer’s Ear (Exostosis & Osteomas), Otomycosis, Meniere’s Disease, Tinnitus, Vestibular Neuritis, Balance Disorders and Vertigo and Facial Nerve disorders

A neurotologist provides surgical care to the nerves that connect the ear and brain, which includes treatment of hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the ear, facial nerve disorders, congenital malformations of the ear, and tumors of the ear, hearing nerve, and skull base.
Anterior Skull Base Surgery

Tumors that grow in the base of the skull—behind the eyes and nose—are some of the most challenging to treat. These tumors grow in an area that is very close to critical nerves and blood vessels in the brain, head, neck and spinal cord. Even benign (non-cancerous) tumors of the skull base can cause serious complications, such as vision or hearing loss and effects on growth, hormone production, fertility or balance. Fortunately, new minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed in the last decade that make the removal of many skull base tumors possible without large and potentially dangerous incisions in the face or head. Using endoscopic instruments and neuronavigation, surgeons can now remove some tumors through the nostrils or through tiny incisions in the eyebrow or the back of the ear. At BEIRC, we are dedicated to the safest, most comprehensive treatment and removal of skull base tumors. Lateral Skull Base Surgery

The term “skull base” refers to the gap between the bottom of the brain and the part of the skull that is directly below it. Within the skull base are the blood vessels that supply the brain with nutrients and oxygen, as well as nerves that are critical to functions such as vision, smell, hearing, facial movement and breathing. The “lateral skull base” is one specific area of the skull base, located at the side of the skull. This portion of the skull base includes structures called the temporal bone, infratemporal fossa, clivus, and middle and posterior fossae. Tumors at the lateral skull base can pose a particular risk to the brain stem, which connects the brain to the spinal cord. This is a delicate and important part of the body’s neurological system. Advanced surgical techniques can be used to operate on tumors in this part of the skull base without needlessly disrupting the brain. Lateral skull base surgery can be completed either endoscopically or using a microsurgical approach, and can be used to treat conditions like meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, glioma tumors , encephaloceles , cholesteatomas, schwannomas, and glomus tumors. Abnormal tissue is removed in small pieces, often allowing for complete resection of the tumor. During surgery, a neurophysiological monitoring system tracks electrical activity within the brain to ensure that brain functioning remains healthy throughout the operation. Pediatric ENT

Paediatric ENT is a sub-speciality that gives comprehensive, compassionate and personalised care for children with ENT problems. Children cannot always express what is bothering them and are not always amenable to routine physical examination. Our pediatric team is dedicated to the compassionate, expert care of all young patients with disorders of the ear, nose, and throat.
